I’m just joking. slightly. In reality being a musician is not a clear cut path or journey. Music is something that you will always be learning more about, and unless you have 200 years on earth, you will never stop learning.

Here’s my real tips to becoming a musician and developing musicianship skills.

• Find a niche

• Get a good learning instrument

• Find a mentor

• Join an ensemble or group

• Create a practice routine

• Find fun ways to practice

• Don’t reject theory and ear training

• Compose and learn song structure

• Allow room for the process to work

• Find internal motivation - don’t do it for your teacher, find your voice!

I always try to explain to people I teach that ANYONE can create music. But, developing musicianship skills involve students dedication and time to practicing their craft and more importantly applying this to real situations and creations. Picking a path and delving deep is one way I have found to become a better musician.
