About Me
Laurel Joy is a musician, songwriter, teacher, and music therapy intern based in CT & NYC.
Laurel has been playing piano for 17 years, with her roots in jazz, blues, rock, and styles of pop. She has been playing gigs and solo piano events for 10+ years, with experience in songwriting, teaching beginners of all ages, and music therapy. She studied music therapy and jazz piano, at both WMU and SCSU. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Music therapy and psychology.
She has been a collaborative pianist with many regional artists of the likes of, PROLIFIC, BODHI, Sb Khi, Floyd Zion, Modern Refuge, Ambrose, Purple Fusion, and SAVII. Her piano collaborations have led her to travel across the country to notable CMA fest, Mile of Music Fest, Seeing Sounds fest, and Hartford Bonanza. She is currently featured on singles “Wave empire” and “Eve of Delights”, as well as her own projects under “Laurel Joy”, available via Spotify, Youtube, and composition portfolios. She has written piano parts and lyrics for several collaborative projects, along with over 200 originals works.
Songwriting is a huge part of her work as an artist, but also as a teacher. She has been teaching privately for 6 years. She has taught at School of Rock, her own facility, Hamden transition academy, nursing homes, and community spaces. She currently teaches both adults and children alike, with specializations in teaching adults with IDDs, and adults with dementia diagnoses. Songwriting in her lessons involve a collaborative approach to create, the ability to express difficult emotions, and a tool aiding in recovery. She has used songwriting in lessons for children’s bereavement camps, adults coping with loss, or anyone interested in making their own music. She uses adaptive learning and accessibility philosophies to improve the education field. Laurel teaches beginner-advanced intermediate piano and beginner guitar, ukulele, singing and hand percussion in an accessible way.
She currently runs a group music-making workshop for adults with autism and other neurological disabilities. As a music therapy intern, she also leads the choir, drum circle, music lessons, and offer support for adults with dementia diagnoses.
Laurel offers lessons, studio music, music enrichment, sound baths, event piano, collaborations, and songwriting services via bookings.
